Church is without beauty, as she is if she is not the tree whose root is the Passion of Christ.69 The knowledge on which she prides herself is false, and the wisdom that is her ornament is false, if both are not summed up in Christ;70 if her light is not “light illuminated”, coming wholly from Christ,71 she certainly has us captive in the shadow of death.
